Why Is BIPV So Difficult?

Why is it so difficult to splurge on BIPV Module? This is not unrelated to the following points

Integrating transparent solar energy into any glass panel makes use of existing building space. This makes it "Building Integrated Photovoltaic" (BIPV). Why is it so difficult to splurge on BIPV Module? This is not unrelated to the following points.

Cost - It's hard to estimate because the technology is so new. But with mass production and deployment, plus we can use existing glass and window frames, manufacturing costs could be 50% lower than conventional PV.

Efficiency - There is an efficiency/transparency trade-off. Generally, the higher the transparency, the lower the efficiency. Currently, the highest transparent solar efficiency is around 10%. This is a far cry from conventional photovoltaic efficiency.

Operating life - This is especially important for organic solar cells. They degrade when exposed to oxygen or water vapor and are subject to extreme high and low temperatures. For this, we need cells with good longevity.

Lifecycle impacts - these have not been extensively studied. However, environmental justice issues can exist at every stage of the supply chain and throughout the life cycle of transparent solar cells. We need to make sure that the problems of conventional solar (rare earth mining, waste, pollution, water, social issues) are not repeated.

Equitable distribution - Minorities and minorities currently have less access to solar energy regardless of income. As we scale this technology, we must focus on improving access to solar energy in marginalized communities.

Jiaxing Fuying Composite Materials Co., Ltd. is a mono solar panels manufacturer and supplier in China. It sells PV solar panels and other products all year round.
