Keeping your electric fence Sealed 12v Battery running is just one more chore nobody wants to deal with. But unfortunately, its something that every rancher faces. There are a lot of variables that you have to take into account to determine why your electric fence battery isn’t lasting as long as it should. Temperature, short circuits, location, battery capacity, and other issues can all shorten your run-time. Here are five helpful tips on ways to get more life out of your electric fence batteries.

Heat is the biggest killer of batteries. It causes the liquid electrolyte to evaporate faster, which in turn will eventually damage the battery. Usually, your battery sits inside a box somewhere outside near the fence. One of the best ways to make sure your battery lives up to its potential is to put it in an insulated box.

Cold is the second biggest killer. The same rules apply. If it gets too cold, it can form ice crystals damaging the cells. You may even consider a small underground box since the temperature below ground is more stable.

One other variable is the capacity of the battery. If your battery pack is on the low-power side, you can be over-using the battery every day.
Take a look at your electric fence controller and locate the input volts and amps (unless you have this one pictured). Then look on your battery to see what the capacity is. Typically at 40% of capacity, the electronics will stop drawing from the battery as it can damage the circuitry. As long as you stay with the same voltage, you can always use a more powerful battery. If your battery is a 12V12Ah battery, you may want to get a 12V18Ah battery. It will be a little larger, but worth it when you don’t have to replace it every year.

Check your fence. You may be losing power because your ground is bad, or there is an insulation problem. If the wire is touching something it’s not supposed to, then it will drain your battery fast!
