The history of Christmas lights
Did you know that the Christmas lights as we know them today did not become popular until the 1930s? However, this technology has existed before, when it was a good idea proposed by Edward Hibberd Johnson in 1882.
The first Christmas lights accessories were manually wired by 80 red, white, and blue globes and powered by a generator. Johnson strung it on a tree, and then placed the tree on the rotating base of the window in his living room. It attracted many people, including several reporters. It was so successful that Johnson started adding more lights each year, and in 1884 recorded that the tree was lit by 120 lights.
Although beautiful, unfortunately, this technology is advanced, and when Christmas lights accessories are provided to the public, they are too expensive for ordinary people. So, what do people use instead? Candle, believe it or not!
During the festival, open flames do cause fire hazards, and people are looking for more. In 1894, the first lamp set entered the White House and gradually became popular from there. By 1914, Christmas lights were affordable to everyone, and by 1930 they had become commonplace. From the large and expensive incandescent lamps to the currently popular LED string lights, Christmas lights have indeed come a long way.
