As a custom motorcycle shop in South Florida and aftermarket motorcycle parts retailer for more than 25 years, Demon’s Cycle understands the importance of motorcycle maintenance and encourages bikers to not only check the brakes frequently, but motorcycle parts and accessories Suppliers suggested you to know how often to replace brake rotors as well, which are often overlooked.

What Are Brake Rotors?
Every vehicle needs to have a braking system to help them slow down and stop. One of the key components of the brakes on a motorcycle are the brake rotors. When you step on your brakes, your motorcycle brake pads are compressed against the brake rotors, creating immense friction to help stop your motorcycle. While this friction enables your motorcycle to stop, it eventually wears on your brake rotors.

Brake rotors typically need to be replaced after 30,000-70,000 miles, but aggressive driving, excessive heat, the weather conditions in your area, and the frequency of maintenance check-ups can affect how long they last. The experts at Demon’s Cycle share a few things that indicate you should replace brake rotors on your motorcycle.

Signs That Point Towards Brake Rotors Replacement
Noisy Brakes
If you notice the motorcycle brakes are squeaking or making squealing noises, it may be due to worn, warped, or cracked brake rotors.

First, examine your brake pads, rotors, and calipers to see if there is debris such as rock or bits of gravel stuck, which can cause scraping or grinding noises to occur. Small rocks and bits of debris might be easily removed and if your brakes are no longer noisy, they should be okay. However, large rocks or gravel that have been stuck for a long time may have permanently damaged your brake rotors. If your brakes are still making noise after removing debris, you should replace the brake rotors immediately or risk permanent damage to the brakes and motorcycle overall.

Vibrating Motorcycle Brakes
If you feel a pulsing or vibrating from your brakes or brake lever, examine your brake rotors. Rotors that are pressed against the brake calipers means they have been warped from heat, friction, and usual wear and tear. This is another sign that the rotors should be replaced immediately for safety concerns.

Visible Warping or Tears
Since the brake rotors are compressed against your brakes, they are exposed to immense heat from the friction. Eventually, the brake rotors will warp or tear due to exposure to immense heat for an extended period of time. If you notice visible warping or tears in your brake rotors, replace them immediately or risk damage to your motorcycle brakes.
