The clutch is an important part of the automobile transmission system. It directly accepts the power output by the engine, and then transmits it to the gearbox to reduce the speed and increase the torque, and then transmit it to the wheels. It has the functions of smooth engagement to ensure a smooth start of the car, temporarily cut off the power to ensure smooth work when shifting gears and prevent overload of the transmission system. What we usually call the clutch refers to the manual gear model. In fact, there is also a clutch inside the automatic transmission, but its structure and working principle are quite different from this.

The clutch is mainly composed of four parts: the driving part, the driven part, the pressing part and the operating mechanism. The clutch disc we usually say belongs to the driven part. Its working principle is also very simple, that is, relying on the principle of friction to transmit engine power. When there is a gap between the driven disk and the flywheel, the flywheel cannot drive the driven disk to rotate, and the clutch is in a disengaged state; when the pressing force presses the driven disk to the flywheel, the frictional force of the flywheel surface against the surface of the driven disk drives the follower The moving disc rotates and the clutch is in the engaged state. Diaphragm clutches are commonly used in cars nowadays.

The working process of the clutch can be divided into the separation process and the engagement process. In the separation process, step on the clutch pedal, the free clearance of the clutch is first eliminated in the free stroke, and then the separation clearance is generated in the working stroke, and the clutch is separated. In the process of engagement, gradually loosen the clutch pedal, the pressure plate moves forward under the action of the compression spring, first eliminate the separation gap, and apply sufficient pressure on the pressure plate, driven plate and flywheel working surface; The release bearing moves backward under the action of the return spring, creating a free gap and the clutch is engaged.

The common faults of the clutch include clutch slippage, incomplete clutch separation, abnormal clutch noise, shaking when starting, etc. These faults need to be disassembled for maintenance. Its service life has a lot to do with the driver’s operating methods and usage habits, and the gap is also very large. Some can be replaced for hundreds of thousands of kilometers, and some can be replaced after 30,000 to 20,000 kilometers. It can also be said that the clutch is used. Life is an evaluation criterion of the driver's driving level.
