I decided to conduct some research in order to provide you with some actual figures. First, I bought an electric meter for less than $20 so that I could measure the actual power consumed by my deep freezer.
This is what I found:
Our solar chest freezer consumes an average of 1.1 kWh per day. In winter, the cost of a kilowatt-hour of electricity is 15-18 cents, depending on the time of day. In the summer (four months), it costs 30 cents per kilowatt-hour during peak hours (3 to 8 pm), and 23 cents at all other times, which is about 25 cents on average.
In summer, the cost of running a deep freezer is approximately $7.50 per month. From October to May, the monthly cost is approximately $4.68. Annually, it is US$67.44 per year or US$5.62 per month on average.
Keep in mind that the freezer is most efficient when it is full. Keeping frozen things cool is easier than keeping empty spaces cool. When you try to fill the freezer for the first time, consider freezing the bottled water to take up some air space so that your freezer does not have to struggle anymore. Moreover, chest freezers are generally more energy-efficient than vertical freezers. Open upright refrigerator (cooling tank) loses less cold air than upright cold air.
