Over the years new materials have moved family tents away from the traditional A-frame/ridge variety and those based on a steel frame. Generic shapes now tend to be based around the dome and tunnel.

Geodesic, semi-geodesic, dome and tunnel tents are all options for buyers, but not all work well as a large family tent.
Tunnel Tents
Captured perfectly in the name, aluminium outdoor gazebo use two or more flexibleand parallel poles with the fabric attached. These form a half-cylinder which can taper towards the end. Layouts inside these tents vary, but usually follows some combination of sleeping area at one end and living area at the other, sleeping at either end and living area in the middle, or sleeping area in the middle and living space either side.

This has been further improved with the adoption of the tunnel style over the traditional dome in the new generation of inflatable tents.

The ability to split rooms easily, and in most cases have a large living space, make these types of tent even more popular with family campers.
Dome
Simple in their most basic form, dome tents consist of two poles whichgo diagonally corner to corner on a rectangular base. Crossing in the middle, the poles hold the shape of the tent through tension, and they can feature inside or outside of the tent fabric.

In their larger family tent form, dome tents are usually much harder to pitch than, for example, tunnel tents, which may explain why they have fallen out of favour in recent years.
