You don't need to be a foil expert to have a basic understanding of the most popular foil methods. Foils are a common specialty design feature on a variety of printed materials. Depending on individual wishes or needs, the foil as a design feature can be applied by a temperature-dependent process - Cold Stamping Foil or Hot Stamping.

Cold foil printing is an inline process that closely replicates hot foil stamping on a web flexo press...but cold foil printing is faster, more efficient, and does not require the expensive tooling associated with hot foil stamping. It is an invaluable tool for enhancing illustrations, packaging, and labels.

To compare cold stamping with hot stamping, hot stamping directly uses a heating process. Prepare the heated die (aka stamp) for the foil design and mount it to the top of the punch. The die is then stamped onto a foil that runs between the stamp on the top and the substrate layer on the bottom. When pressure is applied to the foil from the die, the pattern is mixed onto the surface material. This combination of heat and pressure beautifully transfers the design to paper with real size.

Cold blanching is faster and cheaper than hot blanching, but when high quality is considered, blanching is the way to really get it done. Either way, your product labels, cards, invitations, or marketing materials can be reflective with a variety of colorful hot and cold foils.
