　　Bimetal thermometers work by using two basic characteristics of metals:

　　Thermal expansion characteristics of metals

　　At the same temperature, different metals have different thermal expansion coefficients.

　　The main component of the pressure gauge factory's bimetal thermometer is the bimetal strip. The bimetallic strip is composed of two thin strips of different metals, and each metal strip has a different coefficient of thermal expansion. Thermal expansion is the property of metals that change their shape or volume with changes in temperature. By fusing or riveting the metal strips together, the connection can be made along the length of the metal strips. One end of the strap is fixed, and the other end is free to move.

　　The two metals commonly used are steel and copper, but steel and brass can also be used. Because of their different thermal expansion, for the same temperature, the length of these metals changes at different rates. Due to this characteristic, when the temperature changes, the metal strip on one side will expand, while the other side will not expand, resulting in a bending effect. This can be seen in Figure 2.

　　When the temperature rises, the strip will rotate in the direction of the metal with a lower temperature coefficient. When the temperature decreases, the strips bend in the direction of the metal with a higher temperature coefficient. The deflection of the strip indicates a change in temperature. This bending movement is connected to the dial of the thermometer and outputs the temperature of the medium. Calibration is an important step to ensure that the temperature is read correctly.
